Aquaman on the Daily Show

Aquaman made a brief appearance on Jon Stewart's The Daily Show last night as a member of the Supreme Court. After Jon listed off his slightly altered list of Supreme Court Members, an image of the Court was shown. I've included the original of the image to show you which Justice was replaced by which fictional character.

Jon Stewart: "The final arbiter of American justice is the Supreme Court. Roberts, Ginsberg, Souter, Stevens, ... Blitzen, Sleepy, Aquaman, Thomas and Scalia. These nine judges, these magnificent b*****ds, help settle intractable American disputes. They settle intractable American disputes, oftentimes only 6 to 15 years after the original incident has lost its relevance."

Supreme Court

Note that Aquaman replaces Alito. Aquaman continues to get no respect. *sigh*

Aquaman Wiki
The Aquaman Website continues to grow into its new wikified format. If you want to participate, there are a couple of ways you can help out.

If you simply know of an Aquaman sighting, you can report it on the wiki. If the sighting is in a comic book, post about it in the Sightings Discussion Page. If you have found a reference to Aquaman elsewhere, like on TV (for example: The Simpsons or Mythbusters), you can report it on the AquaSpotting Discussion Page. And MANY MANY thanks to Vinnie for coming up with the name "AquaSpotting".

If you want to help edit, please drop me a line on the Soapbox or The Aquaman Mailing List. Editing on most pages is limited to Atlantean level users because of the extremely high probability of vandalism.

Please check out the new pages and let me know what you think. The Soapbox is there for you to stand on, or you can comment in this post. Seriously. I want some feedback. Thanks.

The Simpsons

A pile of Aquaman references from The Simpsons for you...

First up is The Simpsons Comic #134, in which Homer gets into an altercation with a killer whale and...

Simpsons 134

"Think Homer, think! What would Aquaman do? Fish! I command you to attack the killer whale! Attack, I say!"

D'oh.

Next is the annual Bart Simpsons Treehouse of Horror comic, which had not one, but TWO Aquaman references. First up, from a tale about a mutant fish:

Simpsons Treehouse of Horror

And next up is one of three covers that Bart looks at in the comic shop when he desperately needs to use the restroom:

Simpsons Treehouse of Horror

But the real fun came in the most recently aired Simpsons episode, "Husbands and Knives", which featured comic book writers Alan Moore, Art Spiegelman and Daniel Clowes.

It also featured Bart looking at the Death of Superman:

Simpsons: Husbands and Knives

And the Death of Aquaman:

Simpsons: Husbands and Knives

Note that the two covers are identical except for Superman and Aquaman trading places, logos, and the super-pets. heh. Jack Pendarvis gets a shell for spotting and reporting this one before the show even aired in my area.

Aquaman has made an appearance in the World Series of Pop Culture, as the answer to the following question:

Sightings and Links

In the episode of Smallville "Labyrinth", Clark is in an asylum. Eventually, he learns that everyone he thinks he knows is related to the asylum somehow, including a fellow inmate who turns out to be named Arthur Curry. Blink and you miss it, but it's an Aquaman sighting in an otherwise aqua-less episode of Smallville.

Labyrinth Arthur Curry

Speaking of Smallville, iFMagazine has an interview with Alfred Gough which talks a bit about the ill-fated Aquaman pilot:
There were a lot of different stories to tell on land and sea. The mythology, Atlantis, would have been a small portion of it. Every fourth episode would have dealt with some of that mythology. I think it could have been very interesting that we’re destroying their society and Atlantis has sort of turned into eco-terrorists – sending back people they’ve sort of reprogrammed as suicide bombers. There was an environmental angle to it that was very interesting and you could talk about politics in the way that the best of sci-fi can talk about it -- the way that BATTLESTAR GALACTICA does. It was definitely a cool show, we had a lot of good ideas for, the cast was certainly great. It was probably a bigger, epic show than SMALLVILLE.
Electra Woman and DynaGirl 2001 pilot (YouTube). Aquaman cameos at about 2:39 in, "They're serving halibut at the luncheon!". Thanks to Wil Radcliffe for the report.

Electra Woman and DynaGirl Aquaman 1Electra Woman and DynaGirl Aquaman 2

Dennis Doucette, who is a Prince of Weekiwachee, as seen in these images, has a couple of references for us.

First up is an episode of X-play on G4 TV. Here's a summary of the episode:
Memory Card: A psychotic serial killer who would conceal his identity by speaking through a modified R.O.B. robot. During the 2006 Halloween episode, Memory Card kidnapped a number of G4TV hosts and put them through a series of tortuous deaths. At the end of the episode, it was revealed that the person behind the "Memory Card" persona was actually Aquaman, who wanted revenge on X-Play for naming his Battle for Atlantis the worst game of all time.
Um. Ok.

The next one is a little more lighthearted... In the Jeopardy Teen Tournament on February 12th 2007, Aquaman was a clue. It was in the Jeopardy round, in the "Stamps" category. The first contestant to ring in got it wrong ("Who is Neptune?") but the second to ring in was correct.

Aquaman on Jeopardy

Go check out The Aquaman Shrine for yet another unique collectible, this time an empty but sealed soda pop can featuring Aquaman artwork and lettering in Arabic script. Hey Rob, put up some better pictures and see if someone can translate that sucker! And if anyone else runs across a second example of this, please send it my way. I'd like one of these.

Aquaman to appear on Batman Cartoon.
"The Batman, which is nominated for a 2006-2007 Daytime Emmy Award in the Outstanding Special Class Animation Program category, will focus its new season on the introduction of Batman's Justice League peers. Expect amped-up action and heightened stakes as Superman, Aquaman, The Flash and several others work in concert with Batman -- and even more of his amazing technological wonders -- to defend Gotham from a seemingly never-ending roster of super villains."

Aquaman Sightings

Although I knew about both these sightings, Hugo reminded me to post about them (Thanks Hugo, another shell for you!).

First up, in DC 52 Week 35, Lorena appears as a part of the Teen Titans, helping out in the hospital after the Fall. She's with Plastic Man's son, Offspring.

Lorena with Plas and Offspring

More recently, in DC 52 Week 39, Aquaman himself apparently appears. I say apparently because it's never specifically stated that he's Aquaman, as whatever has happened to Aquaman is already well on its way to finishing. If it is Aquaman, the transformation to half-magic water isn't done, as you can see his full face.

Aquaman Reference - Mythbusters

Sighting reported by Aqua-Researcher Vincent P Bartilucci, who earns another shell for his collection. Sighting confirmed by Laura "Tegan" Gjovaag.

The January 24th 2007 episode of Mythbusters - "Underwater Car", featured two myths. The first regarded water differential when attempting to escape from a car that has gone into water, the second was about paper folding.

In the last segment of the show, going to commercial break before Adam's last two tests in the car, the narrator asks, "Next, has Adam learned how to channel Aquaman?"

Adam channeling Aquaman

For reference, if your car does somehow end up in the water and you have no tool with which to break the window, you have two opportunities to escape with your life. The first opportunity is to open the door right after your car hits the water, before the pressure of the water becomes too great. If you miss that opportunity, you need to remain calm, wait until the cabin of the car fills with water, hold your breath (channel Aquaman) and then open the door once the pressure has equalized. In the last segment of the show, after the Aquaman reference, Adam demonstrated the latter technique and did not need emergency help to escape the car.

Linkage

Dr Sordid profiles Aquaman.

Vincent P Bartilucci reports an Aquaman mention. UPDATE: I confirmed the mention. It's in the first few moments of the episode Lost In Parking Space, Part One in which Clara is walking down the hall checking out the evil of her housemates. First she spots Xander using stem cells to cure leukemia, then she comes across Captain Hero with a woman in bed saying "Oh, come on baby, that fin rot I caught from Aquaman cleared up a long time ago!" to which Clara screams, "Ah, rampant lying!" as she points at Captain Hero. He races to the door, showing off his right arm, which is now a fin, with rotted bits. A porpoise laughs as he slams the door.

Inheritance

Inheritance
I suppose I should report on this prose novel by Devin Grayson, as in includes Aquaman. The novel, Inheritance, has gathered some criticism for its rather blatant subtext. It's supposed to be about the relationship of superheroes to their sidekicks... um. Well... read for yourself (profanity warning). And there is more here.

Galley Cat asked what was up.
So I shot off an email to Grayson and asked her how this all happened. She reminded me that as one of the comic book industry's few openly bisexual women creators, she's enjoyed working queer material into her stories throughout her career. "That said, I am also a contract worker when at DC crafting stories with licensed characters," she explained, "and my job at that time is to stick pretty close to previously established interpretations and guidelines, which is a necessary and satisfying aspect of this kind of work. In the licensed publication novels, we have more room, permission, and need than we usually do in the comics to explore character back story and culture." Despite that additional freedom, she's careful to point out that Inheritance is about father/son dynamics, not gay culture. "But are the characters in Inheritance aware of gay culture?" she asks rhetorically. "Sure. And they get to joke about it, just like I, as the narrator, get to joke about it. I'm joking with the reader, the characters are joking with each other."
I may not really enjoy it, but I do plan on getting a copy. If I do, I'll be sure to review it here for Aquaman fans.

Aquaman PJs in Superman Returns

I have not seen Superman Returns yet. I intend to see it once it's out on DVD. I hate going to movie theaters, so I save that "experience" for movies on my must-see-immediately list.

However, the news that there was an Aquaman reference in Superman Returns meant that it went a little higher on my list of DVDs to check out. Amusingly, someone thought it was important that I see at least images of the PJs even sooner than I see the movie itself. Many thanks to Steve for these images (and no, I'm not going to ask where he got them).

Aquaman PJs 2
Aquaman PJs 3

Out of curiousity, for those who have actually seen the film, is this the best that the PJs showed up? I'm sure it was better on the big screen, but did the kid sit up or something so we got a better look at the design?

Peter David Wants Aquaman PJs

In a spoiler-filled post about Superman Returns, Peter David admits that he "loved the Aquaman pajamas, which had nothing to do with anything, but I want me a pair."

I haven't seen the movie yet, and probably won't for awhile. I'm also curious to see if it can beat Aquaman's fictional opening.

DC Solicits for September

CBR, Newsarama, Comics Continuum, and DC Comics.

Aquaman is solicited, with a nice cover image:

Cover to Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis #45

I also noticed (thanks to an alert husband) that Aquaman is on the cover of Action Comics #843. But a quick check back shows that he's also on the cover of Action #842, due out in August, in a story that starts in Action #841, due out in July. In case you missed them, here are the cover appearances:

Entourage

Apparently without explanation, the folks behind Entourage took out this ad in Variety:

Variety Ad

Just in case you missed the episode and didn't know how well the movie was doing...

By the way, if anyone can score me a copy of this issue of Variety, with the ad, I'd like to hear from you.

Aquaman Dunk

Aquaman Dunk by David3558

David3558 posted a link to this shoe creation over in the website comments. He used the Sneaker Templates at Pigmag.com to create a shoe based on Aquaman's colors. I like it! I would wear it... yeah, even though it wouldn't go with any clothing I own.

Aqua-Character Sighting...

In Teen Titans #34, the first One Year Later issue, we get a single panel of Lorena as Aquagirl, arguing with Hawk. It's impossible to say when this panel took place, but it must have happened sometime in the missing year.

Lorena in Titans
Hawk: "...you c'n swim under-water like Aquaman but you can't talk to fish? We need kids with real power like Zatara and Miss Martian!"
Lorena: "Real power? What's yours birdie? I mean besides whining?"
Hawk: "Birdies eat fish. You know that, right?"
If you want to read the rest, go buy the book.

Aquaman's Cameo in 52 #1

Aquaman and Mera

This is almost it. There is also a shot of Aquaman's shoulder on the next page. Nothing else. No speaking roles.

What I'm more interested in is who that is just over Aquaman's shoulder. Is that Lorena? And, if so, who is she talking to?

Aquaman in 52

Yes, Aquaman does appear in the first issue of 52. The appearance, however, is basically a grade 5 cameo. In one scene he appears with Mera. As soon as I have a chance to fire up my scanner I'll post the tiny appearance here. Whatever happened to Orin happened after the first week of the year as described in 52.

In other news, I've been told by a semi-reliable source that Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis #42 was always going to ship on May 17th, but internal confusion set the Diamond shipping date earlier. As evidence, I was pointed to the shipping date for issue #43, which is also late in the month (although I notice there are two different shipping dates listed in Previews for issue #43). According to this source, DC had plans all along to change the shipping week of Aquaman. While this doesn't quite jibe with other sources, it seems plausible enough to pass along.
