I don't really understand why Spain would have a claim to this recovered gold. And speaking of underwater treasure, look at this rock heist that stole $1 million from an underwater farm.

In another story right out of an Aquaman tale, Mexico is looking for a missing island. The reason is logical, they want the territory the island would give them. But you have to wonder where the island went, if it ever existed in the first place.

I wish I could get this! I probably wouldn't use it either, but it looks great.

Can you identify the fish? It's pretty scary looking.

I feel sorry for these fish. Strange how people get pets, then mistreat them. Why get pets if you can't take care of them?

Pirates of Somalia seize a yacht, capturing 30 crew members and apparently holding them hostage. Of interest: "The International Maritime Bureau, which tracks piracy, said in its annual report earlier this year that global pirate attacks rose 10 percent in 2007, marking the first increase in three years."

Links and Notes

Dan DiDio is confused about Aquaman.

Here's a quick run-down: the original Aquaman, Arthur Orin Curry, is currently "dead" (in the same sense that DC heroes are often dead). Arthur Joseph Curry, who wants to be known as Joseph, is currently playing the part of Aquaman until he can find/restore the original Aquaman. IMHO, Joseph Curry isn't actually Aquaman, he's the Sword of Atlantis. So, whenever DC "brings back" Aquaman, they'll need to address both Joseph's quest and Orin's death. Any restoration that doesn't is crap.

I've been busy off playing at the Emerald City Comicon, so I haven't been updating the links like I should. This has led to a lot of missing links. Here they are:

More Comic Treadmill Aquaman goodness.

The Continuity Blog loves Tad Williams' Aquaman.

Newsarama quotes the Legion of Doom's criticism of Tad Williams... I think they have never met the guy or talked with him, because he's a fanboy and surely does understand his audience, as he's PART OF IT. Still, an interesting critique, if flawed by assumptions on the part of the Legion.

Speaking of, Tad Williams' page now has a limited Aquaman section. Only a solicit there, so far, but might be a place to watch.

I See A Golden Age Aquaman Tale In This Story...

New Island and Floating Pumice. This last paragraph particularly stands out for me:
Pumice rafts drifted to Fiji in 1979 and 1984 from eruptions around Tonga, and some were reportedly 30 kilometers (19 miles) wide
Yeah, I could easily see a good Golden Age Aquaman tale based entirely on this.

David Blaine

Originally, I was going to avoid talking about David Blaine's Underwater Stunt, but seeing a report on it gave me a little fodder for thought. If he actually spends the full amount of time underwater, he might be able to give science some minor information on how the human body reacts to being submerged for an extended period of time.

In addition, he efforts to eat pretty much prove the scenes that Kurt Busiek wrote in the preview pages of Aquaman #42... Blaine is drinking liquid food in the same way King Shark and Arthur are drinking in the preview. Of course, Blaine isn't eating solid foods, as waste disposal is more of a problem when it involves solids.

I think they should add some goldfish to Blaine's bubble. That would make it far more interesting.
