Aquaman on the Daily Show

Aquaman made a brief appearance on Jon Stewart's The Daily Show last night as a member of the Supreme Court. After Jon listed off his slightly altered list of Supreme Court Members, an image of the Court was shown. I've included the original of the image to show you which Justice was replaced by which fictional character.

Jon Stewart: "The final arbiter of American justice is the Supreme Court. Roberts, Ginsberg, Souter, Stevens, ... Blitzen, Sleepy, Aquaman, Thomas and Scalia. These nine judges, these magnificent b*****ds, help settle intractable American disputes. They settle intractable American disputes, oftentimes only 6 to 15 years after the original incident has lost its relevance."

Note that Aquaman replaces Alito. Aquaman continues to get no respect. *sigh*

I feel sorry for these fish. Strange how people get pets, then mistreat them. Why get pets if you can't take care of them?

Pirates of Somalia seize a yacht, capturing 30 crew members and apparently holding them hostage. Of interest: "The International Maritime Bureau, which tracks piracy, said in its annual report earlier this year that global pirate attacks rose 10 percent in 2007, marking the first increase in three years."

More Animated Aquaman?

According to Comics Continuum, Cartoon Network has announced a new cartoon series called "Batman: The Brave and The Bold", set to debut later this year.

"Batman isn't going at it alone this time! From Warner Bros. Animation comes the latest interpretation of the classic Batman franchise. Our caped crusader is teamed up with heroes from across the DC Universe, delivering nonstop action and adventure with a touch of comic relief. Blue Beetle, Green Arrow, Aquaman and countless others will get a chance to uphold justice alongside Batman. Though still based in Gotham, Batman will frequently find himself outside city limits, facing situations that are both unfamiliar and exhilarating. With formidable foes around every corner, Batman will still rely on his stealth, resourcefulness and limitless supply of cool gadgets to bring justice home."

The fact that Aquaman is actually mentioned in the series description bodes well for the chances of his appearance. I'll be watching the airwaves for this one.

The Aquaman Website continues to grow into its new wikified format. If you want to participate, there are a couple of ways you can help out.

If you simply know of an Aquaman sighting, you can report it on the wiki. If the sighting is in a comic book, post about it in the Sightings Discussion Page. If you have found a reference to Aquaman elsewhere, like on TV (for example: The Simpsons or Mythbusters), you can report it on the AquaSpotting Discussion Page. And MANY MANY thanks to Vinnie for coming up with the name "AquaSpotting".

If you want to help edit, please drop me a line on the Soapbox or The Aquaman Mailing List. Editing on most pages is limited to Atlantean level users because of the extremely high probability of vandalism.

I've been setting up a framework to put all the facts and details of this page into an easier format to edit, namely a wiki format. The new section of the page is now ready to visit. Dan DiDio is confused about Aquaman.

Here's a quick run-down: the original Aquaman, Arthur Orin Curry, is currently "dead" (in the same sense that DC heroes are often dead). Arthur Joseph Curry, who wants to be known as Joseph, is currently playing the part of Aquaman until he can find/restore the original Aquaman. IMHO, Joseph Curry isn't actually Aquaman, he's the Sword of Atlantis. So, whenever DC "brings back" Aquaman, they'll need to address both Joseph's quest and Orin's death. Any restoration that doesn't is crap.

This panel appears in More Fun #105, and may be the first reference to Aquaman outside of his own feature. Johnny Quick is recovering a gun that was thrown into a river because it was evidence of some murders.

The "new" Aquaman, the Sword of Atlantis, is going by the name Joseph Curry now, not Arthur. Any writer that calls him Arthur, and any editor that lets that mistake through, just doesn't have a clue.

American Gladiators Aquaman Mention

On the February 4th American Gladiators, contestant Anthony mentioned before "The Wall" contest that his opponent was Spider-Man, but he didn't want to end up like Aquaman (i.e., in the water at the base of the Wall). For the record, his opponent made it up in record time but Anthony didn't do too shabby either, making it up without falling.

I'm reading every Aquaman solo adventure in publication order. After I read each story I will post the cover/splash page and a few thoughts on the story.

Adventure #268 (January 1960) - The Adventures of Aquaboy!

Aquaman has trouble convincing a blind man that Aquaman is real, which causes him to reflect on his past as Aquaboy.

Glove Color: Yellow.

Regular Supporting Cast: Topo.

Captured/Knocked Out report: A seaquake somehow manages to hurt Aquaman so he can't move his arms.

Quotefile: Captain Harte, "So you're an Aquaman, eh? I don't believe you! A man such as you describe couldn't exist in the past, present, or future!"

Finny Friends Report: Aquaboy puts his head in a shark's mouth to prove his powers. Aquaman rides Topo. Aquaboy got sperm whales to support Captain Harte's ship into port. Aquaboy rode a dolphin to lead archaeologists to a wreck. Aquaman calls up one of the sperm whales that saved Harte's ship in the past to save Harte in the present.

This story establishes that the Silver Age Aquaman was active as a child. The Golden Age Aquaman didn't appear much at all, and only as an adult.

I love Aquaboy's Dutch adventure. Heh.
