Administration and a Couple of Links

Aquaman Wiki
I've been setting up a framework to put all the facts and details of this page into an easier format to edit, namely a wiki format. The new section of the page is now ready to visit. The content is still very sparse, but it will build up. Editing on most pages is by invitation only, but you can leave notes on the Soapbox if you have something to say.

Mike Wieringo

I don't want to write this entry.

Aquaman Sketch by Mike Wieringo

July 15th 2004, Mike Wieringo blogged about me and my love of Aquaman, and about his desire to work on Aquaman with Mark Waid. I'd never met him, but he still dedicated this sketch to me and my website. I was thrilled then, and continued to be thrilled as I followed his regular sketches on his site. This spring, he posted another sketch of Aquaman and repeated the desire to work on Aquaman, along with a description of what Mark Waid's previous idea had been like.

Newsarama is reporting that Mike Wieringo passed away yesterday after suffering a major heart attack. He was 44 years old. He will be missed deeply by the comic book community.

Sketchbook - Alex Maleev

I first met Aquaman cover artist Alex Maleev at Emerald City Comicon 2006 and got a sketch from him. He wasn't properly trolled until this year's convention.

As a reminder: Almost every sketch in my sketchbook was non-commissioned and done on the floor of a con. These are not the best works of the artists. These are only representative of what the artist can do under pressure in a loud, crowded, and often stressed-out environment. Most of them were done as quickly as possible, to prevent huge lines from forming. Don't judge any of these artists negatively by the artwork you see, instead be as impressed as I am by what they accomplished in far-from-ideal conditions.

Sketchbook - Mike Grell

I got this Green Arrow sketch from Mike Grell at Emerald City Comicon 2007. He knew I was an Aquaman fan before he started the sketch, but went into automatic as he sketched, only realizing halfway through that I probably wanted Aquaman. So he drew Green Arrow underwater. Nice save!

Sketchbook - Scott Mills

I met Scott Mills at the Emerald City Comicon 2006, and I trolled him before showing off my sketchbook. He's one of those artists that I didn't have to ask for a sketch, he looked through the book and added a sketch without a word between us. Many other artists have noted his use of Zip-A-Tone. He had a sheet of it and a knife, and cut out the pieces to add to the sketch when he finished the drawing.

Sketchbook - Peter Gross

Rather than restart my Saturday Sketches exactly where I left off, I've decided to jump around a bit and post whatever I feel like whenever the Saturday Sketch mood hits me. Thus I'm starting today with a sketch from this year's Emerald City Comicon. The tale of getting this sketch is in ECCC2007 Report Part I. I'll note that as other artists looked through the book, this was one that people paused on to comment about. Without further ado, Peter Gross:

Tad and Links

If you want to know how the Tad Williams signing went, here's my report over on Bloggity. I did ask one spoiler question, which Tad answered, but I'm not going to report that because most of you won't understand the question, and it'll be answered in issue #51 anyway.

Although we talked about Aquaman, I'm spoiler-shy, so we went into no detail. I did get the impression that Orin will remain the focus of the Aquaman legacy as long as Tad is writing the book. It will take awhile to sort out Aquaman and Orin and Arthur Joseph, so don't expect huge changes right away. Tad is working with the story he was bequeathed, and he's going to do justice to it. Tad also wasn't aware that Orin's back-story was going to be told in WWIII, but he'd already been keeping close to Kurt's original plan, so it wasn't as big a problem as it could have been.

And now, some links:

Paul Gulacy May Be New Aquaman Artist

In an interview on Newsarama, Paul Gulacy reports that he may become the new ongoing artist on Aquaman:
KRONENBERG: What current or future projects are you working on?

GULACY: Next up is a four issue Squadron Supreme mini-series written by Marc Guggenheim and then, if all ducks are in a row. I head back to DC to pencil the ongoing Aquaman series with Kurt Busiek.
Paul Gulacy has worked on Star Wars, Batman, The Terminator, and Catwoman. More recently he's worked on Jonah Hex #12 and JSA Classified.

Saturday Sketch - Jeff Johnson

AQUAMAN
by Jeff Johnson
19 July 1998

This is the first of a series of sketches I'll be posting, usually on Saturdays unless I have a reason to post it on another day. I have over 100 of these convention sketches of Aquaman to share. This was actually one of the first I ever got. Way back at a very small local con in 1998 I asked the two artists who I got a chance to chat with about sketches and both of them did sketches on comic backing boards for me. At the time he drew this, Jeff Johnson was working on Green Lantern.

My Sketchbook

I'm not much of an artist, personally. I was taught that anyone can be an artist, but I haven't put in the time or effort to get much past stick-figure level. So when I talk about my Aquaman Sketchbook, I'm talking about sketches I have gotten from other people. Most of these are of Aquaman, although I have a few other sketches mixed in. I keep them on a rarely updated sketchbook page in the virtual world, and on my desk near me at all times in the real world. I'm now going to revive a tradition I had on my regular blog... the Saturday Sketch. Any time there isn't a ton of news to report, I'll be posting a sketch on Saturday.
