Sketchbook - Alex Maleev

I first met Aquaman cover artist Alex Maleev at Emerald City Comicon 2006 and got a sketch from him. He wasn't properly trolled until this year's convention.

As a reminder: Almost every sketch in my sketchbook was non-commissioned and done on the floor of a con. These are not the best works of the artists. These are only representative of what the artist can do under pressure in a loud, crowded, and often stressed-out environment. Most of them were done as quickly as possible, to prevent huge lines from forming. Don't judge any of these artists negatively by the artwork you see, instead be as impressed as I am by what they accomplished in far-from-ideal conditions.

The Saturday Sketch ™ is brought to you by the letters "A", "M" and the number "54", and also courtesy the fine artists who pour their lives into producing wonderful comic books, then come to conventions only to get asked by geeky fangirls for a sketch of Aquaman. Sketchbook - Mike Grell

I got this Green Arrow sketch from Mike Grell at Emerald City Comicon 2007. He knew I was an Aquaman fan before he started the sketch, but went into automatic as he sketched, only realizing halfway through that I probably wanted Aquaman. So he drew Green Arrow underwater. Nice save!

Sketchbook - Scott Mills

I met Scott Mills at the Emerald City Comicon 2006, and I trolled him before showing off my sketchbook. He's one of those artists that I didn't have to ask for a sketch, he looked through the book and added a sketch without a word between us. Many other artists have noted his use of Zip-A-Tone. He had a sheet of it and a knife, and cut out the pieces to add to the sketch when he finished the drawing.

Sketchbook - Erik Larsen

I got this sketch from Larsen at Emerald City Comicon 2006 on Sunday. Erik asked for some input on this sketch, but in the end gave Aquaman an unexpected and hilarious buddy.

Sketchbook - Peter Gross

Rather than restart my Saturday Sketches exactly where I left off, I've decided to jump around a bit and post whatever I feel like whenever the Saturday Sketch mood hits me. Thus I'm starting today with a sketch from this year's Emerald City Comicon. The tale of getting this sketch is in ECCC2007 Report Part I. I'll note that as other artists looked through the book, this was one that people paused on to comment about. Without further ado, Peter Gross:

Siya Oum is a model, but she's also a talented artist. This is her version of Aquaman, looking a bit like a Manga character.

Is anyone liking these sketches at all? I've got pretty much zero response so far, so I don't know if anyone is even noticing them...

Another week, another sketch. I can't promise to post one every single Saturday, but I'll post them when I don't have tons of other stuff to report. This sketch is by the great Scott Alan, and was the first sketch I was given permission to post.

Saturday Sketch - Jeff Johnson

Jeff Johnson
AQUAMAN
by Jeff Johnson
19 July 1998

This is the first of a series of sketches I'll be posting, usually on Saturdays unless I have a reason to post it on another day. I have over 100 of these convention sketches of Aquaman to share. This was actually one of the first I ever got. Way back at a very small local con in 1998 I asked the two artists who I got a chance to chat with about sketches and both of them did sketches on comic backing boards for me. At the time he drew this, Jeff Johnson was working on Green Lantern.

My Sketchbook

I'm not much of an artist, personally. I was taught that anyone can be an artist, but I haven't put in the time or effort to get much past stick-figure level. So when I talk about my Aquaman Sketchbook, I'm talking about sketches I have gotten from other people. Most of these are of Aquaman, although I have a few other sketches mixed in. I keep them on a rarely updated sketchbook page in the virtual world, and on my desk near me at all times in the real world. I'm now going to revive a tradition I had on my regular blog... the Saturday Sketch. Any time there isn't a ton of news to report, I'll be posting a sketch on Saturday. If you want a sneak peak, with the understanding that the page hasn't been updated recently, click on the banner below...
