Aquaman #45 is OUT TODAY!!

My shop doesn't open for another 3 1/2 hours, so to keep me occupied until then, here are some links:

Tad Williams' Website. Tad Williams on Wikipedia. Tad Williams Bibliography. Tad Williams talks Aquaman.

AquaChicken. AquaChicken vs Doctor Octopus.

Originally found in 2000, archaeologists are finally getting a good look at a Roman shipwreck. Too bad Aquaman wasn't around to help excavate it and protect it from those pirate scuba divers.

Aquaman goes green! Ok, it's not Aquaman, it's Adrian Grenier, who played Vince on Entourage, who played Aquaman in the fictional movie on Entourage, but a link is a link, and this one looked fun.

CBS Blog Report on Aquaman

CBS's Blogophile tackles the question of Aquaman, with quotes from various bloggers about the life imitating art aspect of the possible Aquaman movie.

I'd rather everyone picked up the comic book to check it out, personally.

And, yes, the Aquaman pilot is still the top video download on iTunes, with over 550 reviews now, still running an average of four stars. I think the show would've hit its intended audience perfectly.

LA Times Claims Aquaman Movie is in Works

LA Times:
"Aquaman," one of Hollywood's hottest inside jokes, might make the move from fiction to reality. As a key plot line in HBO's "Entourage," the "movie" directed by James Cameron shattered box-office records (a feat that got it a real ad in Variety), turned an unknown actor into a $20-million movie star and sparked a fight over a sequel.

But now, informal talks have been launched about the feasibility of making a real Warner Bros. "Aquaman" movie. In one of the strangest twists of this life-imitating-art tale, the talent agent at the center of the emerging "Aquaman" deal is Ari Emanuel, the brassy Endeavor partner on whom "Entourage" agent Ari Gold is based.

Warner Bros. said Thursday that the studio "is not currently developing" an "Aquaman" project. But according to four people familiar with the idea, conversations already have been held about the character's film rights, controlled by DC Comics, itself a part of Time Warner Inc. One top filmmaker's name also has surfaced as a potential "Aquaman" director — "Charlie's Angels" alumnus McG. The director is finishing the football film "We Are Marshall"; his reps declined comment on the "Aquaman" prospects.

[...]

You can also see potential audience interest. When Aquaman made a cameo on "Smallville" last season, it was the season's highest-rated episode.

Gough says he is nevertheless pleased that Warners gave his and Millar's pilot to iTunes. In addition to generating thousands of downloads, the pilot also is attracting strong feedback within the industry, enough that Gough holds out slim hope that it could attract enough Internet interest to revive "Aquaman" as a TV series.

Aquaman Top Download on iTunes

As of this morning, the Aquaman pilot (working title "Mercy Reef") was the top TV show download from iTunes video. It had 53 reviews, the vast majority giving it 4 or 5 stars. Of the ones giving it lower ratings, one was complaining about not being able to play it on his iPod, one was making stupid cracks about the Entourage movie, and only one actually discussed the bits of the pilot that the reviewer didn't like.

Of my readers, who all has seen it, and what did you think?

Did CNBC Really Mess Up?

Aquaman's fictional box-office record was apparently reported as real on CNBC. However... the newscaster claimed it was a joke and is backed up by his earlier statements in the same newscast.

The proof is on this site, which links to both the statement that people are upset about, and the earlier statement in which the reporter first made it clear that he knew the Aquaman movie was fictional. I'm also linking to both clips below:

Pirates Defeat Aquaman

Aquaman's fictional opening weekend in Entourage has been blown out of the water by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which has had an opening better than $120 million. Final numbers won't be released until Monday, but Vince better get working on his next movie soon...

"Keep up those requests!"

Go to this page and submit a request for an Aquaman T-shirt from the Entourage show! For the subject line, put "Entourage Aquaman T-Shirt?" and for the content, just request a t-shirt based on the Aquaman movie in the show.

I'll be checking the HBO Entourage Shop regularly and will alert folks if I see an official shirt appear. T-Shirt Watch has a link to what appears to be an unofficial t-shirt, but I'd like to see a legit one, personally.

So let's start a wave. Write in and ask for it.

Peter David Wants Aquaman PJs

In a spoiler-filled post about Superman Returns, Peter David admits that he "loved the Aquaman pajamas, which had nothing to do with anything, but I want me a pair."

I haven't seen the movie yet, and probably won't for awhile. I'm also curious to see if it can beat Aquaman's fictional opening.

I Dropped My Monkey!

If this is still up on YouTube, this is the clip from the Aquaman movie starring Vincent Chase that was shown on the second episode of this season's Entourage. It features Vince in a tux racing toward a towering wave, while the general public runs away in a panic, and has the classic line of "I dropped my monkey!" from a little girl.

Enjoy.

Variety Reports...

Entourage Floats Faux Feature.
"Aquaman," it seems, has opened the floodgates.

James Cameron hasn't directed a major movie in nearly a decade, so it's understandable there was some excitement when an eye-catching two-page ad ran in the June 16 Daily Variety touting the record $116 million opening weekend of his latest epic, the comicbook adaptation "Aquaman."

Except, of course, it was all made up.
The article goes on to say that some people were fooled by the ad, and that Cameron has now been encouraged by his fans and supporters, and even some "industry watchers", to make the film for real. Even Peter David got in the act, reports Variety, quoting him as saying "Now all we need is for Cameron to REALLY make an Aquaman film and we're good to go."

Sadly, although the article is new, the quotes it uses do not indicate some sea change in Hollywood's thinking about the movie. PAD wrote the quote on his website in August of last year, and the other quote from staff members of Entourage were made last year as well. The only news in the article is in regards to the fake ad in Variety, and even that was reported elsewhere widely. I wouldn't put a lot of hope into this one, but it is fun to see.

Entourage

Apparently without explanation, the folks behind Entourage took out this ad in Variety:

Just in case you missed the episode and didn't know how well the movie was doing...

By the way, if anyone can score me a copy of this issue of Variety, with the ad, I'd like to hear from you.

LA Times on Entourage

They're No Angels...
The archetypes are so strong, some have even had trouble separating art from life. Director James Cameron, who played a megalomaniacal director named James Cameron working on a fictional movie called "Aquaman," said he was surprised that acquaintances believed the project was real. When he jokingly remarked that he was making "Aquaman," they replied, "Yeah, I heard that. How's it going?"

"The funniest thing for me," Cameron said, "is I could have made 'Aquaman' with just two phone calls. It shows you how warped our perspective is. It spawned real momentum."
Two phone calls, huh? Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

This is the continuation of last year's plotline involving Vince getting the part in an Aquaman movie. Entourage

USA Today on Entourage. Key quote for Aquaman fans:
When deciding how to handle the box-office fate of Vince's film, Aquaman, Ellin had to consider Titanic director James Cameron, who plays himself as Aquaman's director. "You don't want to make (Cameron) have a bad movie," he says. The season explores how the guys deal with success' twists and turns.

Aquaman TV Report

KryptonSite has a link to a NY Times Article that points out that only projects that were in development for UPN made the Fall CW lineup. The article, which is mostly about Smallville, has this to say about Aquaman:
An October episode introduced the character Aquaman, and was the season's most-watched episode, with 6.4 million viewers. It was meant to be a one-off goof on the HBO comedy "Entourage," in which the lead character got the part of a superhero swimmer in a movie called "Aquaman." But because the ratings were so high, Mr. Gough and Mr. Millar quickly developed an Aquaman series idea for WB.

When the announcement of the creation of CW was made in January, Mr. Gough said, "It was like switching schools in the middle of the school year." The "Aquaman" pilot production continued, but it was not on the schedule that Ms. Ostroff announced on Thursday. (CW picked up only three new series for next season, which were all under development under Ms. Ostroff at UPN.)
As long as we're mentioning it, the new season of Entourage starts June 11th, and one of the plotlines is reportedly about Vince having troubles with the studio over Aquaman 2. Yes, Aquaman 2. The trailer for season 3 on the site has a bit from the premiere of Aquaman.

In other Aquaman media news, AquamanTV.com links to a review of the pilot episode, in which the reviewer gives the pilot 9 out of 10 stars. I've heard from a couple of other people who have seen the pilot, and overall reaction has been positive. I hope to eventually get a copy of the pilot myself, but so far I've had no luck through my usual channels. You'll have to wait until I see it for the thoughts of a rabid Aquaman fan.

In the meantime, reaction to the trailer has been overwhelmingly positive, despite the few jokers who can't get over Superfriends. The Petition to Save Mercy Reef now has over 500 signatures. While such a petition isn't likely to have any effect, it's gratifying to see that people actually like the idea of the show. At least... those that don't just want to see Justin Hartley topless all the time.

Whew. There's more Aquaman TV news now that the show isn't on the Fall schedule than there was before we knew what was going on...

Aqualinks

Ever so slightly related to Aquaman is this report of Kevin Dillon's wedding. Dillon plays "Johnny Drama" on Entourage who is "frustrated and depressed at having been cast in the Aquaman movie in the very supporting role of flipper-footed Aquasoldier #8". Heh.

And i like toys has updated his rockstar Aquaman entry to include this sketch of the King at rest, also available in color.

Aquaman Spin-Off?

I don't like spreading completely unfounded rumors, but this one has enough sources to accept as more than the garden variety rumor.

The ratings for Aquaman's appearance on Smallville were very good, leading to speculation that Aquaman was in the works for his own spin-off. As it turns out, the rumors are true. An Aquaman spin-off is in the works. Whether or not the spin-off will ever make it to the screen is a different question, though, as at any given time there are thousands of projects in the works.

Adding fuel to the fire is the report that the producers of Justice League Unlimited were told not to use Aquaman this season. That's standard business when a project is in the works, and does not mean that the project will ever get made.

As an added note, this project has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the storyline on Entourage, and HBO show
