After his mother died and he was born premature, Arthur Joseph Curry was kept alive by his father by turning him into a water-breather. During a storm, his tank is ruptured, sending him into the ocean. He's found by the Dweller of the Depths and King Shark. The Dweller mistakes him for Aquaman, and sends him to fulfill his destiny.
Eventually he learns the truth, and determines to go by the name Joseph.
