It's the first appearance of Atlantis – and Aquaman's first encounter with Atlanteans! How will this story of Arthur's past set the stage for his future? Find out here!
Synopsis
After his father's death, Arthur seeks out a man said to be from Atlantis to learn the truth of his existence.
Summary
On his deathbed, Tom Curry asks his son to find his mother. On the day of Curry's funeral, Arthur leaps into the sea while being pursued by the media in a frenzy.
Arthur swims for awhile, then is attacked by a shark. He manages to use his powers to get it to leave him alone, then surfaces in the middle of a storm. He stops a boat from hitting rocks, saving a father and daughter on board. Aquaman confesses his history to the pair and the father says he's heard of a man who claims to be from Atlantis living in a fishing village in Norway.
Arthur travels to Norway to meet Vulko, who greets his as King. Vulko claims to be stalked by the Atlantean guard and tells Arthur that his mother's name was Atlanna. Vulko was an advisor to Arthur's grandfather and mother. Vulko also tells Arthur that his mother is dead and fills in Arthur's history. The two then travel to Atlantis.
Comments
This issue features a 1:25 B&W variant wraparound cover.
The original preview cover shows Aquaman bursting through the cover of the first issue of this series. The published cover shows him bursting through the second page of the story. This issue also has a sketch variant cover.
The zero issues contained origin stories. This one slightly contradicts Dr. Shin's story (in issue #10) that Aquaman went after Manta the day of his father's funeral, but does reveal what Tom Curry's last words to Arthur were.
Vulko tells Aquaman that an unexplained storm called "The Raging Eye" was what brought Tom Curry and Atlanna together. Atlanna rescued Tom, they fell in love, she returned to Atlantis then discovered she was pregnant and attempted to abdicate to be with Tom. She was imprisoned instead, but escaped and gave birth just off the coast. She gave Arthur to Tom, then returned to protect them. She was forced to marry the captain of the Atlantean Guard and gave birth to Orm. When Orm's father died, Atlanna tried to return to Tom with 12-year-old Orm, but was murdered. Orm took the throne and Vulko was kicked out of Atlantis and searched for Arthur for 10 years.
Vulko provides Arthur with a map to the Dead King's armory, where the artifacts are stored. He also gives Arthur stones that were in the Dead King's crown.
