Ripples Through Time - 056
I'm reading every Aquaman solo adventure in publication order, one per day. After I read each story I'm going to post the cover/splash page and a few thoughts on the story.
Want to read these stories yourself? Write to DC: Dan Didio, Executive Editor, DC Comics, 1700 Broadway, New York NY 10019 and ask for a reprint of Aquaman's Golden Age tales.
Adventure #123 (December 1947) - Villainy in Venice!
Dina Lewis spent her life savings to travel to Venice to find romance, instead she stumbled over a plot to steal paintings and ran into Aquaman.
Finny Friends Report: A fish delivers Dina's compact to Aquaman, complete with the note begging for help. He has dolphins patrol the canals of Venice, and they find Dina when the thugs throw her into the water. Dolphins also pull the giant clam shell that Aquaman uses to transport Dina, sealed, to an underwater treasure, then to the pageant. Octopi and dolphins clog the engine of the modified gondola and remove the guns from the crew.
At the beginning of the story, Aquaman is at his "Adriatic Headquarters in the Gulf of Venice". Hmmm. I think this means that Aquaman has multiple headquarters! Which makes sense for a guy who appears to be constantly on the move, checking out the oceans from shore to shore.
I love the opening splash of Aquaman in a "chariot" made from a giant shell pulled by two dolphins. Even better, the chariot shows up later in the tale. The ball is dedicated to Neptune, and Aquaman's "costume" and chariot fit the theme nicely.
The bad guys could've avoided a lot of grief if they'd just killed Dina before tossing her in the canal. Dina, in the meantime, clearly falls for Aquaman and is heartbroken when he leaves her at the end of the story, suggesting that the reward money for the capture of the Count go to her. Let's see... he saved her life twice, took her to an underwater shipwreck filled with treasure, escorted her in style to a ball... yeah, I can see why she's heart-broken.
Captured/Knocked Out report: Aquaman is briefly choked by the smoke bombs.
Quotefile: Dina, on going to the ball with Aquaman, "I can't go! My dress is ruined - and my other clothes left with my ship this morning!"
