Aquaman #34: Interesting use of layouts to give the story a feeling of weight. Recommended. $1.75/$2.50Cn
"The Spanish Main (Event)" Award to Aquaman #34
Aquaman "One on One" is told in a visual style that takes a lot of coordination to work, and for the most part is carried off successfully. While the main action of every page is a near-splash page of Aquaman versus Triton (not Typhon, as I think some advance press put it), marginal panels deal with events before and during the fight. A smaller, also marginal, panel on each page or pair of pages shows the face of one of the aquatic beings watching the fight. These face-shots are combined at the climax of the fight into a grid of cheering supporters, chanting "Swimmer!" over and over, as it becomes apparent that Aquaman has won their support back and is about to win the fight.
And so Aquaman wins. And in revenge, Poseidon gives him the prize, the power of a god. It doesn't go down well.
This issue shows a single "title fight" from beginning to end and from multiple angles, which lends it a great feel of weight and importance, unlike some of the rushed "climactic" fights of the last year. Yet, at the same time, it's obviously NOT a climax, it's just the beginning of the story.
