Aquaman and the Imperiled Sub

The imperiled submarine

Hostess® Ad: Aquaman and the Imperiled Sub

Appeared in: Batman #300, Superboy #240, Superboy #241

Writer: Unknown
Art: Curt Swan and Vince Colletta
Year: June-July 1978

Note: This adventure takes place in a Hypertime dimension known as Earth-Hostess®.

OVERVIEW

Aquaman and Aqualad are out riding their seahorses when they spot a tidal wave. They dive to escape it, and spot a miniature research sub with two occupants that will be crushed. Aquaman calls some dolphins to push the sub onto shore, where it is safe. The grateful researchers share their Hostess® Twinkies® Cakes with Aquaman and Aqualad.

COMMENTS

A true tsunami is virtually invisible when you are out to sea, and only dangerous when it hits land. Thus the writers got it backwards in this dangerous episode, as pushing the submarine onto land would only guarantee its destruction.

I wonder if all research mini-subs carry a supply of Twinkies® to feed to helpful sea-going super-heroes?

CONCLUSION

Not a bad story, for an ad. The Twinkies® are an aside at the end, instead of a plot point.
