From the depths of the ocean comes the Karaqan — a monster so immense, Aquaman doesn't even know how to start battling it! And while he may have no idea what it is, the people of Atlantis do — and the LAST thing they want is for their king to try to stop it!

Synopsis

Aquaman defeats the Karaqan without help from Atlanteans, but something strange happens as it dies.

Summary

In Amnesty Bay, Evans continues to look for Aquaman and gets advice from a waitress.

While trying to communicate with the Karaqan, Aquaman links to the creature's memories. Both he and the Karaqan are frozen during the link. Aquaman breaks free, but the monster continues its rampage and Aquaman goes back to rescuing people.

At Triton Base, the people who woke the creature watch Aquaman's fight. Dr. Shin is one of them, and is surprised that his boss, Blythe, still wants a sample from the creature.

Aquaman attempts to control the Karaqan in vain. He has a quick flashback to working with his father on the lighthouse. After getting stepped on, Aquaman decides to put his trident through its brain. He succeeds, killing the creature.

The Atlanteans arrive, as do the people looking for a sample from the creature. While Aquaman is distracted, the scientists take a sample of the creature's brain from Aquaman's trident. Aquaman still feels the creature's memories, even as it dies. The creature starts to burn itself up, and some locals get Aquaman's attention to thank him for saving them.

As Aquaman leaves, he orders Neol to head in a different direction because he can sense the Karaqan's brain impulses moving that way. Back at Triton Base, Coombs cuts himself while repairing a servo and attracts some sharks.

This issue features a 1:25 Scribblenauts Unmasked variant cover. The cover is based on the cover of the first issue of the series. The cover is promoting the Scribblenauts video game.

Evans, the man looking for Aquaman, is talking on the phone with someone named Richards. He also mentions "our dig", implying that he's an archaeologist. The waitress points out Aquaman's home to Evans.

While connected with the Karaqan, Aquaman sees it defending Atlantis from "Othermen". The Karaqan crushes, eats or burns its enemies. It has a flame breath, and in the previous issue destroyed two fighter jets with it.

In the flashback we learn that Aquaman's great-grandmother ran the lighthouse before Tom Curry took it over. Her husband was lost in the great New England hurricane of '38, according to Tom. She ran the lighthouse for more than 40 years before Tom took over when she passed away until the officials could find someone else to do the job. During that time he met Aquaman's mother, then decided to stay at the lighthouse.
