Dave's DC Rant: Aquaman #17

"The Man Who Would Be King"

Cover of Aquaman #17

Aquaman "Numbers": Aquaman sets out on his quest to reunite the five cities of Atlantis in order to fight back the coming invasion, and we find out a bit more about the players involved, along with getting "DC Reason For The Extinction Of The Dinosaurs" #2 that I've seen, although I don't doubt that there's been more.

Strom's side is still not totally certain. He's *probably* on the side of the angels, but he could very well be allied with the invaders as well. And when J'onn assures him that an invasion of Atlantis would be a bad thing, he doesn't seem totally deterred.

Meanwhile, Aquaman and Dolphin have taken off for the first stop in a funky ship he found in the depths of the skull-meteor-ship-thing. During travel time, he clues Dolphin in on the history lesson, which sounds to me like a somewhat more benevolent version of the Plodex from Alpha Flight.

They arrive at Hy-brasil and Aquaman faces the king and guardian of that city. The people there merged with mantas. Y'see the race which merged with humanity to form the undersea peoples is *very* adaptable. They can breed with anything. And this is PAD's explanation for the difference between the Poseidan and Tritonians, the fish-tail guys simply interbred with more fish than people, or something. Aquaman finally beats the guardian and becomes the new King, with all duties that go with it, such as mating with the Queen. On pain of death. Neither Dolphin nor Aquaman are too pleased at this prospect.

Ocean Master returns next issue...perhaps he's found and subverted another of the cities?
